I remember going downtown Battle Creek with my mother in the early 60’s. Woolworths was our big treat when we went downtown to see the ophthalmologist, or if we went shopping. Usually my mother shopped through the Sears or JC Penney catalogues for us, but sometimes we needed something ASAP. We would dress up. We wore hats and gloves and our Sunday best. My mother curled my hair. I carried a small wicker basket purse covered with cloth violas. I still have it. Sometimes we ate lunch (sandwich, Campbell’s soup and a glass of milk) or if it was too early for lunch, we just went for cups of Postum! It was a real treat! I felt so adult sitting with my cup of Postum!
